Self-love exercises carried out on a regular basis work positively to boost your self-esteem. These focus on how you think about yourself on the outside and inside. Our physical, mental and emotional well-being are so important, as any negativity and lack of self-love can affect many aspects of our lives.

Sometimes it can be hard to put ourselves and our needs and wants first. But practicing self-love techniques doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take up too much time. Just setting aside a few minutes in a morning, evening or in your lunch break can reap rewards in many areas of life.

Applying the Law of Attraction to your life is the perfect way to manifest your goals into action. Without self-love, however, you may struggle against self-esteem issues regardless of your achievements. Don’t worry. This article discusses 20 self-love exercises that will change your life for the better.

Importance of Self-Love

Self-love is important because it affects how we see and feel about ourselves, our relationships, the choices we make in life, our confidence to face the fear and do it anyway, and whether we have the courage to grasp opportunities when they come our way, or, indeed, creating chances and openings to further our career and improve our financial situation.

You’re always with yourself, so you might as well enjoy the company.

All of these are examples of a lack of self-love which, in turn, affects self-esteem:
  • Focusing on the negative (as you perceive them) aspects of how you look.
  • Limiting social interactions in case you say or do the wrong thing.
  • Feeling that you’ve not achieved in life what you should have by now.
  • Comparing yourself and your life negatively to others?
  • Feeling that you need to ‘be perfect’ to fit in, be accepted, or be attractive/desirable?

The digital age sees us flooded with a variety of social media sites in which every person’s lives look better than ours. We suffer through constant erosions to our self-worth, our self-esteem, and we are taught that loving ourselves is somehow selfish. Self-love psychology in the West is geared towards becoming the ‘perfect’ human being.

Loving yourself is the best way of taking care of yourself as it provides self-confidence, a positive outlook on yourself and your life, and a feeling of self-worth.

Therefore, this helps to deal better with setbacks as we see the positive in situations, it will create the confidence to try new things or step outside of your comfort zone, there’s no need to worry about what others think of us, we don’t compare our looks, lives, etc. with that of others, and we learn more about ourselves and where our boundaries are.

When you don’t love yourself, it is easy to focus on what we think is wrong with ourselves than what is good.

So, instead, take this mantra as your own:

I am no better and no worse than any other human being.

Let’s teach ourselves new self-love psychology and rewrite our interpretation of ourselves.

When we settle our own vibrations, the Law of Attraction can fully apply itself.

Are you having difficulty giving yourself the self-love you need and deserve? Is a lack of self-assurance having a negative impact on your life?

Learning how to increase self-love can be carried out using self-love exercises on a regular basis.

20 Self-Love Exercises to Boost Self-Esteem

These self-love exercises are simple and straightforward, but the benefits they produce are immeasurable. They emphasize the importance of taking care of yourself which, in turn, helps to boost self-esteem.

The following techniques may feel alien or be outside your comfort zone initially, but start small, then each day you can build on those which work for you.

Here are 20 self-love exercises you can try to rediscover a love for yourself and increase your self-worth, confidence, and an appreciation of who you are and what you have achieved.
1 – In the Mirror
All you need is ten minutes alone and a mirror (full length, if possible). Stare at yourself. Really look. Imagine you were walking past yourself in the street. How would you see you then? Would your opinion be different than it is now?

2 – Forgive Yourself
Everyone makes mistakes. Are you still concerned about mistakes your loved ones made in the past, or did you readily forgive them and move on? Why did you forgive them so easily if you can’t forgive yourself?

You don’t expect other people to be perfect, so why would you expect yourself to be perfect?

When you’re giving yourself a hard time, imagine you’re talking to your best friend – how would your words, tone and reaction be different? Be your own best friend in these situations. You won’t be as hard on yourself anymore.
Loving ourselves works miracles in our lives ~ Louise Hay
3 – Keep a Journal
If writing about each and every day is a bit daunting because you don’t know where to start, you haven’t got the time to commit, you’ll be too tired at the end of the day to do it, or you don’t think you’ve got anything interesting/exciting to say, start with 5 things that you are grateful for, have achieved, warmed your heart, made you laugh, or have been constructive that day.

Recording these help you to assess the day and is a great way of building a sense of self-worth.

Also, if you are experiencing negativity or difficulties and you can’t seem to find an answer, writing it down can either be great therapy (instead of the situation endlessly going round in circles in your mind) or can help to find a solution, such as if you can write an advantage and disadvantage list to help you determine your options.

4 – Daily Affirmations
Every day, write three positive things about the day ahead or yourself in your journal. These positive affirmations can change you attitude to become naturally more positive. Check out these Affirmations which you can use to cover many aspects of your life.

5 – Prioritize
This exercise comes from learning to say no to people. Over time, you are going to learn to treat yourself like a priority. Look at your schedule and eliminate the things you don’t really need to do.

Setting boundaries of what you will and won’t/can and can’t commit to will stop you from spreading yourself too thin because you are trying to please everyone, and also feeling burned out/tired/anxious which can lead to illness and/or anxiety and depression if this is a long-term problem.

No one will put yourself first if you don’t.

6 – Reschedule
While you have that schedule out, factor in some you-time. Arrange your schedule so you have at least one thirty-minute break from life, every day. In this time you can do something that you enjoy without having to include anyone else. It’s your “me time”.

Whether it’s going for a walk, reading a book, listening to music, enjoying a creative hobby, exercise, baking, playing computer games, watching YouTube videos, learning a new language, etc.

It can be a time to relax, to learn or be productive – whatever suits you.

7 – Meditate More!
Meditation calms the brain, increases your vibration and works to give you a sense of deeper connection with the world around you. Mindful have a good guide on meditation to get you started.
Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It’s sanity ~ Andre Gide
8 – Self-Care
Self-care is how we treat ourselves when no one else is looking. To start changing your attitude towards yourself, scheduling self-care breaks into your routine can make all the difference. See my article on self-care exercises for further information.

9 – Instinct
We instinctively know what is right and wrong for us, yet the modern world encourages us to go against this. Start listening to your gut. Trust it.

Practicing meditation or mindfulness is a great way to be in tune with yourself. Calming yourself and quietening your mind is key to making informed decisions, not overreacting in certain situations, and trusting your instinct of what is right and wrong for you.

When you cultivate the innate skill to trust your own intuition and awareness, you nurture self-love. Owning and trusting your gut instinct is empowering.

10 – Reward Yourself!
What’s the point in completing steps towards your eventual goal if you don’t pause and take a moment to celebrate your achievements?

11 – Self-Love Psychology
Educating yourself about the reasons why you are doing this can be great motivation. Psychology Today has some good resources on this.
Love yourself enough to set boundaries. Your time and energy are precious. You get to choose how you use it. You teach people how to treat you by deciding what you will and won’t accept ~ Anna Taylor
12 – Your Circle
Some people take advantage of you, some bring you down, some cost you time and energy. Surround yourself with positive, supportive people. You will soak up their vibe!

13 – Step Outside Your Comfort Zone!
Say yes if you’re invited somewhere where you wouldn’t usually go. Try to change your daily routine if it’s steadily turning into Groundhog Day. If you want to learn something new, take the plunge and sign up for that evening class. If you enjoy walking, join a hiking group.

The activities and examples are endless.

Trying something new will give your self-esteem a boost because of what you will achieve, you will gain the confidence to know that you can try something different, and you may even find new interests that you enjoy which you have never tried before.

14 – Diet
Your body won’t function properly without the correct nutrients. See this article for what foods to pay attention to, to increase self-love.
To establish true self-esteem, we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives ~ Denis Waitley
15 – Develop a Positive Mindset
Create a compassionate and more generous perception of yourself and your life by thinking positively about what you like about yourself, what you are grateful for, what your talents are, what others like about you, seeing the positive (glass half full) in situations.

Are you kind and considerate? What achievements have you accomplished in your career? Are you enjoying a new hobby that you’ve taken up? Are you close to friends and family? Not everything in life has to be measured by a major life milestone to feel or that everything is perfect and amazing.

To embrace self-love, don’t take the positives for granted. Also, don’t concentrate on the one negative/bad thing when there are nine other positives that you can appreciate and be grateful for.

16 – Digitally Disconnect
Don’t forget to make yourself unreachable sometimes. Disconnecting once a day is a must for good self-love growth.

17 – Vision Boards
Creating a vision board filled with all of the things you want to achieve will give you the inspiration you need to strive. You should place it somewhere that you will see it every morning and every night.

Visualizing your dream life keeps the focus and motivation to keep your future goals in sight with a sense of positivity, belief, and self-worth that you deserve to live your dreams.

Visualize for at least 5 minutes each day, which involves seeing in your mind’s eye your dreams, but also believing and feeling that your dreams are already a part of your life.
Your task is not to seek for Love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it ~ Rumi
18 – Be Kind to Yourself and Others
It doesn’t cost anything to be considerate, thoughtful and caring, it might just make someone else’s day as well as your own.

How many of these do you do regularly?
  • Smile at a stranger
  • Compliment others on how they look, what they’re wearing, what you like about them.
  • Send a thank-you card
  • Donate to charity
  • Clean up litter even if you didn’t cause it
  • Pay for the person’s coffee behind you in the queue (see more random acts of kindness)
  • Help someone who can’t reach a product off a shelf or if someone is struggling to carry their shopping
  • Go round to your neighbours to see how they are of if they need anything
  • Leave positive feedback for all the books you’ve read, products you’ve bought, or services you’ve used.
  • Pledge towards a Kickstarter campaign or crowdfunding project.
  • Say please and thank you, even if you don’t hear it back…
  • When talking about others, be kind. Don’t fall into the trap of gossiping or bad-mouthing others.
  • When talking about yourself, be kind and positive. Don’t take a negative slant on who you are, what you’ve achieved or what you look like. You don’t have to brag or be overconfident to give yourself self-love – just a belief in yourself that you are good enough, and ‘Yes, I am deserving of a good life.’

19 – Back to Nature
Nature helps to relax the mind, ground yourself, creates a peaceful time out, and gets us back to a true sense of connection with ourselves and environments. Take breaks in the countryside, by the beach, in woodland/forests as often as possible.

20 – Create a Bucket List
What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to travel to? Would you like to run a marathon? Is a skydive a lifelong ambition? Would you like to write a book? Do you have a favourite singer you’d like to see in concert? Would you like to go snorkelling or deep sea diving?

Whatever your desired experiences or goals, make a list, then a plan of how you’re going to achieve it and a timeline, and then a savings plan.

This is a fantastic way to inspire yourself to realize great accomplishments. The only limits are your imagination and the determination to make it happen!
To fall in love with yourself is the first secret to happiness ~ Robert Morley
